How Margin handles a page you choose to check
Last updated 9 October 2026
Margin is a Chrome extension that marks up the writing on a web page you choose to check. It is an invite-only beta run by Richard Simms. Contact: richard@rsimms.com.
What Margin reads
Margin reads nothing until you turn it on for a tab, or pick a section of that tab. Then it reads the visible text of that page or section. It never reads form fields, passwords, or hidden content. It stops reading when you turn it off or leave the page.
What leaves your browser
- Page text. When Margin is on, it sends the text it has read to Margin’s server at margin.rsimms.com. The server sends that text to TypeSafe, the AI service that judges the writing, and returns the scores to your browser. Margin’s server doesn’t store the text. TypeSafe handles it under its own privacy policy.
- Your invite code. It goes with every request so the server can confirm you were invited.
What the Margin server records
For each request, the server keeps a log line with these fields:
- the label attached to your invite code (for example
alice) - a one-way hash of your IP address
- which feature was used
- how many pieces of text were judged
- how many tokens TypeSafe used
- how long the request took
- whether it succeeded
The log line never includes page text. These logs are used to stop abuse, control cost, and fix errors. They are Vercel runtime logs, kept for 1 hour on the Hobby plan, 1 day on Pro, and up to 30 days if Observability Plus is on.
What stays in your browser
Your settings, your custom rules, and your invite code are saved in Chrome’s extension storage on your device. Uninstalling Margin removes them.
What Margin does not do
- Margin does not sell or share your data. The only exception is sending page text to TypeSafe so it can judge the writing.
- Margin does not use your data for advertising, and does not use it to decide anyone’s creditworthiness or eligibility for anything.
- Margin does not track your browsing. It only acts on the tab where you turn it on.
Margin’s use of information follows the Chrome Web Store User Data Policy, including the Limited Use requirements.
Your choices
- To stop sending text, turn Margin off for the page.
- To end your access, uninstall the extension.
- To have your invite code revoked, or to ask a question, email richard@rsimms.com.
